Thyme is the dried flowering and leafy branches of the Thymus species. Thymus species are small-leaved perennial plants with white or pink flowers, strong and pungent odor. According to some sources, thyme has soothing, antiseptic, deworming and blood circulation accelerating effects. Although its general use is in the form of spices, thyme water and thyme oil are also frequently consumed. Thyme water is obtained from the flowering branches of some Origanum species grown in the Western and Southeastern Anatolian plateaus by water vapor distillation method. Thyme water contains a small amount of phenolic compounds. Thyme water has been used for many years. Especially in the Ottoman period, thyme water was sold on the streets of Istanbul by peddlers. It was known as a cough suppressant and expectorant.
It is antibacterial. According to the information in some sources, it is recommended for gum diseases and is used in gingival recession.
It is supportive in relieving nausea after radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
When consumed orally, it is known to alleviate the problems experienced after meals.
